Take time to plan for your individual financial success

The holiday season is over and after over spending it is not a wonder many New Year's resolutions involve finances. Resolutions are good, but without a solid plan, they can be hard to maintain much like staying on that new diet is!
Yes the start of a new year is the perfect time to take a fresh look at your financial planning. First and foremost it is important to have a clear picture of where you are right now. Start with the simple facts which include income, expenses, debts, assets and investments. Track your spending for a couple of months to give you a clear idea as to those small purchases you might be making that could be taking a bite out of your bank account without you even realizing or better yet remembering. Use one of the many free apps on the market like Spending Tracker or Mint that will track your spending and give you a weekly report.
Then ask yourself where you want to be in the future. Do you have a retirement plan in place? Have you started saving for your kids future education needs? Do you have a form of disability insurance to protect your most important asset, your income? Do you have adequate life insurance to cover your mortgage, your debts and final expenses? Do you want to support a local charity? Do you want to travel? All of these questions and more should be the foundation for your plan. Some of these are not easy topics to think about and that is why it can help to have a trusted Financial Advisor to discuss your options with. Search for someone you feel comfortable with, who will respect your values, your wishes and your risk preference and together map out a plan that reflects your goals.
Once you have a plan you need to develop a budget and most important you need to stick to it! Part of your budget should be focused on getting out of debt. It is always a good idea to pay off the most expensive debt which in most cases is the credit card with the highest interest rate. A budget isn't just about spending it's also about saving and if you save for something specific it feels more rewarding and is much easier to stay motivated. A great way of saving is to use a Tax Free Savings Account. Don't have one yet then make this the year you open one! Set up an automatic transfer directly from your bank account then you will be less tempted to use the money for something else.
Remember if you want a fatter wallet and more peace of mind this year then contact me today and lets make those money resolutions a reality! Healthier finances can also lead to a healthier lifestyle so you might be able to take care of two resolutions at the same time.

Thinking of taking a trip to warmer destinations?

It's that time of year that many Canadians head South to soak up the sun. Many people travel at risk and don't even give it a second thought. Unfortunately, illness and accidents can still happen and those travelling without insurance put themselves at risk and at what cost?

Let's look at a few examples of just how much something like an allergic reaction or car accident can cost. An allergic reaction + 45 minutes in hospital + Benadryl + Pepcid treatment can  = $40,000+ in medical bills.
A car accident + 3 weeks in hospital + treatment can = $1,200,000+ in medical bills.

Travel Insurance is a small price to pay to avoid a very big financial risk. Standard Rate examples for $10,000,000 in coverage - Single Trip *based on number of days are as follows:
Age 26-39 : $2.84 - $3.62/day
Age 40-54 : $3.18 - $4.00/day
Age 55-59 : $3.72 - $5.00/day
Doesn't seem like much for peace of mind does it?

Following are testimonials from Manulife Insurance customers:

- While on an 8 day trip to Colorado, Mr. X became ill and was diagnosed with colitis, dehydration and hypoglycemia. He was admitted to hospital for 5 days in total (3 in ICU). Final bill was over $80,000.  "you guys came through like gang busters and helped bring down our stress in a not so great time...Thank you so much!"

- Male age 72 on a trip to Mexico was diagnosed with acute appendicitis requiring immediate surgery. Direct billing was arranged. Due to medical emergency the client was unable to return home on original flight. Assistance Centre engaged the travel agent and booked new flights. Final bill was $40,500. " you were the light at the end of the tunnel during this ordeal. Thank you so much for your help!"

Don't let a disability dig you deeper into debt

Let’s say you suddenly came down with a serious illness, or you have suffered a lengthy injury. Would your farm business be able to go on without you? If you are like most farmers, probably not or at least not without it costing you your hard earned money.

No one likes to think of the what ifs, yet most farmers do consider the what ifs when they plan their crops. For instance, this year proved to be an exceptionally dry year with many farmers experiencing lower crop yields and even crop failure as a result of the drought. Thankfully most have crop insurance in place for just these times. We also carry insurance on our homes and buildings because we know we couldn’t afford to rebuild on our own. The vehicles we drive are insured even our tools, the farm equipment and in some cases our cell phones because things can happen that are out of our control.

Why is it then, that people are reluctant to insure their most important asset, the ability to make an income? Perhaps you think it is too expensive, but have you asked your local insurance broker for a quote recently? I think you would be surprised at just how affordable disability insurance is. There are now products on the market designed specifically for those in the agricultural industry using special tax rules to take advantage of your amortization expenses when calculating your insurable income. What does that mean? It means more money for you if you should become ill or injured.

According to Statistics Canada, there is a one in three chance that you will experience a disability lasting for 90 days or longer by the age of 65. Disability Insurance helps you with your operating expenses and rehabilitation costs by paying you a monthly income replacement benefit when you are not able to work due to an illness or an accident. Letting you focus on getting better and back to business.

Think of the important role you play in your farm operation. You have every reason to protect yourself against the unexpected.
